Main route (recommended)
- Delhi → Hapur → Gajraula — fast four-lane stretch, roughly 90 minutes if you leave before 7am, closer to 2 hours if you leave mid-morning through Ghaziabad traffic.
- Gajraula → Moradabad — good road, this is where most drivers take the first proper tea break.
- Moradabad → Rampur — busier town stretch, expect some slow crawling through Rampur market.
- Rampur → Rudrapur → Kathgodam — road opens up again, flat and quick, last chance for a full-service fuel stop before the hills.
- Kathgodam → Jeolikote → Nainital — the climb. 27 km of continuous hairpins gaining roughly 1,500 metres of elevation, typically 60–75 minutes.
Alternative routes worth knowing
Via Haridwar-Kashipur: used when NH9 near Moradabad has heavy construction traffic; adds roughly 25–30 minutes but the road surface is often better maintained.
Bareilly bypass route: some drivers switch to this when there’s a jam reported near Rampur; it’s slightly longer in distance but can save time if the direct route is congested.
Road condition, honestly
NH9 up to Rampur is largely good four-lane highway with occasional single-lane construction patches, mostly near Gajraula. Past Rudrapur the road narrows. The Kathgodam–Nainital hill road is well-paved but genuinely narrow in sections — two buses passing each other near Jeolikote sometimes means both vehicles slow to a crawl.
